![]() Those higher frequencies can deliver gigabit speeds in the right circumstances, but the tradeoff is they don't travel as far and can struggle with obstructions.ĥG accounts for those high-speed range limitations by mixing slower mid- and low-band signals that travel farther for better coverage. 5G is much faster than that, and that's because the standard's millimeter-wave technology (aka mmWave) sends signals at much higher frequencies than LTE. With Verizon's 4G LTE home internet plan, customers can typically expect download speeds ranging from 25Mbps to 50Mbps, with uploads in the single digits. No matter your choice of the two options, you can get an additional 50% off if you have a qualifying Verizon 5G mobile plan.Ĭomparing Verizon 5G to Verizon 4G LTE speeds If you don't, tack on another $10 monthly. There are two options: you can choose whether you want a two-year price guarantee - at $50 a month, including all taxes and fees - or a three-year price lock at $70 per month (plus extra perks), everything included. Want to see if Verizon 5G Home Internet is available at your address? Here's the Verizon availability link. That lack of availability might change soon (and I'm eager to test the service out and tell you all about it), but for now, all I can do is wait. But Verizon can't offer service at my address yet, even though I have a cell plan with Verizon and service that's strong enough for my phone to connect over 5G semi-regularly when I'm at home. I live near downtown Louisville, Kentucky, where Verizon's 5G Home Internet is an option for some. ![]() When was the last time you did something good for the environment?.Do you think that everyone is treated equally in this world?.Do you believe that everything happens for a reason?.What do you do to make you feel better when you are feeling sad.Write down fun things you like to do to help you relax? don’t forget to check this out:.Write about a time you felt completely lost but managed to find your way back.Do you ever felt lonely in a big crowd? The topics for writing in this blog post is made to help adults and even children eliminate writer’s block. As Mark Twain said: The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.īetter writing equals better communication.Even the best writer needs inspiration to start writing. Word choice can showcase your knowledge and education … or make you look juvenile and amateur. Make sure you’ve used clear and concise words, and that you’ve stopped writing when you’ve made your point. Spend time reading and reviewing your work, even if it’s a simple email. The best way to improve your writing, whether you like to write or not, is to pay attention! While that may sound overly simple, it’s true. Either way, the reader needs to intuitively understand your point without asking questions or using Wikipedia to figure out what you’re trying to say. When writing a note to a roommate or friend, you may choose to use slang or ultra-casual language. Avoid words like “utilize” rather than “use,” “ascertain” rather than “find out.” Exciting writing is focused and simple.ĥ.Choose appropriate words. If you write a technical piece for a publication, client, or colleague, you may choose to use jargon, acronyms, and industry-speak the intended audience naturally understands. Instead of “don't have the resources,” use “lack the resources.” Change “in view of the fact that” to “because.” Rather than “at the conclusion of the meeting,” write “following the meeting.” Shorter phrases make your writing easier to read and more interesting longer phrases, while technically accurate, muddy up your writing.Ĥ.Choose simple words. Trying to impress people with big words and complex sentences leads to ineffective writing. For example, rather than “several people,” use “three people.” Did you notice the title of this article? Instead of just saying “Tips to Make Your Writing More Exciting,” we’ve said, “5 Tips ….” Using numbers draws attention and gives the reader a “specific” path to follow.ģ.Choose concise phrasing. To keep your writing short and to the point, use specific words. Instead of saying “he was running the meeting with an iron fist,” say “he ran the meeting with an iron fist.” Instead of “Bill is a great employee,” try “Bill works exceptionally well on a team.”Ģ.Choose precise words. All writing is made up of words. For example, instead of “the ball was thrown,” write “he threw the ball.” Whenever possible, avoid the “to be” verb (is, are, am, was, were). Passive voice, or leaving the subject out of the sentence, makes it look like you are trying to avoid responsibility. Here are 5 practical tips you can apply right away.ġ. The best way to do this is to pay attention to your word choice. If you want your message to resonate, you’ll want to find ways to make your writing more appealing, interesting, and informative. However, the focus shouldn’t be on whether you want to write it should be on your message. Regardless, all of us have to write something on a daily basis, whether it’s an email, proposal, presentation, article, and just about anything else. Perhaps you enjoy writing or perhaps you find it sort of painful.
![]() ![]() What happens if a scorpion stings you?Īccording to the article “Scorpions of the Desert Southwest United States” by Dawn H. Nair said the Arizona bark scorpion is the only one in the state that is "medically significant," or likely to cause dangerous symptoms. Very few scorpion deaths have been reported in the U.S. Here's everything you need to know about these eight-legged creatures, including what to do if you get stung.īut does it work? This mom found a hack to keep scorpions out of her baby's crib Are scorpions in Arizona poisonous?Īccording to the Mayo Clinic, scorpion stings can hurt but are “rarely life-threatening.” ![]() “I think scorpions are really fascinating predatory arachnids, that are actually (distributed) worldwide, and we have some really cool species in the desert Southwest and especially in Arizona,” Nair said. Shaku Nair, an entomologist and associate in extension at the University of Arizona, said scorpions are more related to spiders and ticks than to insects. Scorpions can be a fear for many people due to their pincers, stingers and venom. Whether you’re an Arizona native or just visiting, you've almost certainly wondered about scorpions.Ībout 40 to 60 species of these arachnids live in the Grand Canyon State, according to the Arizona Department of Agriculture. He has lived with his wife, Flo, in Moapa since 1997.View Gallery: 10 of Arizona's creepiest, crawliest inhabitants But when a black light emitting UV light was shone upon the blindfolded individuals, their bodies glowed and the individuals became active as if it was dark.īy this test, it seems that scorpions need and use UV light to ‘know’ when it is the right time to get out and hunt and do other things that scorpions do.Īt this point, nothing has been concluded about any of this, and the search for answers goes on.īruce Lund is a retired biologist and has a lifelong love of nature instilled by his grandparents and some remarkable teachers. One bit of evidence of a connection is that when scorpions were blindfolded by covering their eyes with foil, the scorpions remained inactive as if they could not detect whether it was dark or daylight. Since scorpions’ bodies fluoresce under ultraviolet light, scientists are trying to see if there is a connection. On the other hand, we know that scorpions are most active at night, and that this is also when ultraviolet light is at its strongest from starlight and moonlight (the UV is still dim, but is stronger relative to other forms of light radiation). If glowing had a function like helping scorpions to find mates (like flashing of the fireflies) or to attract prey (like some deep ocean fish), we would expect to see scorpions to turn on their glow at will. On the one hand, it may be that the glow is nothing more than chance – that scorpions simply possess a protein in their exoskeleton that reacts to UV light by fluorescing their blue-green color. Desert Scorpions are a drab tan color in all other kinds of light (Photo by Bruce Lund) WHY scorpions ‘glow’ under the influence of ultraviolet light is a mystery that scientists are still trying to solve. Thus when a black light (which emits ultraviolet radiation that is invisible to our eyes) is shone on this type of scorpion, it chemically reacts with a protein in the scorpion’s exoskeleton and emits the blue-green light (glow) which our eyes can see. Flourescence is where one kind of light radiation causes a chemical reaction that emits a different kind of light radiation. Just how scorpions manage to ‘glow’ is explained by the physics of fluorescence. This included the ‘glowing’ Hairy Desert Scorpion which is our largest scorpion and a common one in our area. Using black light flashlights, the kind available at local hardware stores, participants discovered lots of scorpions out and about at the Bat Night event held at the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge a couple of weeks ago. By BRUCE LUND A Hairy Desert Scorpion found the Moapa Valley Wildlife Refuge a couple of weeks ago glows an eerie blue/green when a black light is shined upon it. Sharing, creating, analyzing, and discussing technology-infused assignments allow students to engage more with their lessons while helping them to build advanced skills. The Intel® SFI framework aims to enable students to become the next generation of innovators by maximizing the use of technology in education. The Intel® Skills for Innovation (SFI) framework and support programs help teachers with lesson plans and professional development to gain the experience they need to implement a new approach to their curriculum. ![]() Intel’s commitment to STEM education goes beyond technology. ![]() Simon also explores how we can help future female innovators become empowered with STEM, sharing four steps that she believes can significantly increase interest in STEM for girls. Simon says this is why she wrote a children’s book, Abby Invents, which centers around a young female inventor who creates the world’s first unbreakable crayons. In this blog, she explains that a key reason why girls don’t pursue STEM careers is because they lack female role models. ![]() Arlyne Simon, an Intel engineer with a doctorate in macromolecular science and engineering. The organization also strives to reach one million girls through engaging STEM programs, grant funding, and a collective approach for strengthening existing communities.Īnother way Intel is involving girls in STEM is with help from Dr. With only about a fifth of engineering undergraduate degrees belonging to women, the movement aims to create and transform engineering and computer science learning opportunities for girls. In 2020, the Intel Foundation launched the Million Girls Moonshot movement with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. Intel wants to not only equip students with STEM education, but also create equity in STEM. By using tech in STEM education, teachers and IT administrators can best prepare students for this diverse, tech-driven economy. This could be using simulation technology to defend a client in court, using editing software for a movie, or even analyzing data for a bank. Since we live in a tech-driven world, technology is implemented into aspects of daily life and work.įarmers, lawyers, doctors, film directors, bank tellers, and musicians all use some form of technology to be successful. Today, STEM education not only helps prepare students for jobs in tech, but for a much wider variety of employment. The older model for STEM education was to prepare students for technology-related jobs. Through this activity, they will develop skills in data science, simulation, and modeling, as well as a design thinking mindset. Mindsets refer to how students approach the world around them, the social-emotional skills they use, and how they solve the problems they face, such as through computational thinking.įor example, if students learn about the effect wind and soil erosion have on farmland areas, they may use a form of geographic technology that identifies the correlations between weather and land characteristics. Skill sets refer to the ability to carry out a task to solve a specific problem, like programming, data science skills, and simulation skills. When using technology in an active learning environment, students can develop innovative skill sets and mindsets that foster creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities. Developing Innovative Skill Sets and Mindsets A transformation to a technology-supported, skills-based curriculum helps students develop specific skill sets and mindsets that will equip them to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world and prepare them for the jobs of the future. Instead of focusing on teaching how to use technology itself, with an aim to prepare students for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, technology should be at the center of students’ learning activities to maximize learning outcomes. Students are already surrounded by technology every day. However, while STEM education may not be a new concept, schools are changing the way they are approaching it. A STEM education can also lead to quality employment for students in the future where they can effectively use the lessons they learned in school. Also known as STEAM (for introducing the arts as a crucial aspect of students’ education), the learning approach has long been accredited for generating educational benefits among students. ![]() Since the 1990s, STEM education (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) has become one of the most essential building blocks for student success in education. ![]() If you have a bigger garden to tackle, you’ll be best suited to double-sided cutters, which allow you to trim in a sweeping, back-and-forth motion for a speedier process. Ultimately it depends on the size of your garden and the hedges you intend to trim. Hedge trimmers FAQs What size hedge trimmer do I need? The variable speed control means that you can increase or decrease the blade speed when needed and this is all backed up by Ego’s battery system which is one of the best on the market. It also works really well when it’s brought back down to earth and you need to cut in a scything motion. It can be a bit of a workout when operating at its limit, however the 51cm blade with 26mm of blade gap and excellent cutting speed is super-efficient, so it will make quick work of tidying up, including areas clogged with thicker branches. The extension reaches to four metres and the double-sided trimmer head has six adjustable angles. ![]() The system has two heads so you can switch between the PSX2500 pruning saw attachment and PTX5100 hedge trimmer attachment, and of course it was the latter that we were really interested in. No nests? Then let us guide you through the maze of trimmers, to find the right one for you.Īs the name suggests, this is part of the telescopic pole system, which will get you within cutting distance of high hedges so you won’t have the hassle of constructing platforms or balancing on ladders. Whichever trimmer you decide upon, just make sure that, before you start work, you check carefully for any nesting birds, as it’s illegal to damage or destroy these nests, and you’ll have to delay the job until the nest is abandoned. You also need a tool that’s well balanced and lightweight, as hedge trimming puts you in an unorthodox working position and can be very tiring on the arms if you’re not working with a tool that has good ergonomics. The blade is important for efficient working, so we were after machines that had enough distance between the working teeth (manufacturers call this the blade gap) so they didn’t jam or snag as we worked on hedges with varying branch thicknesses. If you don’t have to stretch quite so far, you will probably get along just fine with a trimmer powered by the mains.Įither way, if you have a lot of hedge to contend with, you need a trimmer that’s good for continued use and fitted with a long blade that will get more done in one sweep. If they’re quite a stretch from the house, best to go with a battery-powered trimmer, as you won’t end up getting into a tangle with extension chords. You’ll want to consider where the hedges are on your property, and how much hedge you have. With power tools designed to take the pain out of pruning your garden, gone are the days of perching precariously on a ladder with only a pair of rusty shears to hand. To claim the full warranty a registration form may need to be completed - please check the paperwork enclosed with this product when purchased. With the warmer weather leaving us with one less excuse for avoiding garden chores, you may be thinking about giving your hedges a short back and sides. Over and over, they were friendly and doe-eyed, and presented treat after free treat of awful food. At the end, I almost felt crazy… It started with the perma-smiled host bringing a pair of adorable little baby spring rolls to the table, bowing deeply as we «oohed and ahhhed» at the cute presentation. When we bit in, it was a tasteless vegetable goo reminiscent of undercooked wet puff pastry mixed with wet newspaper. I ordered some unagi and Tamago Nigiri, which was presented with a flourish, but the unagi was a little ripped up scrap of cold eel, and the tamago was ice cold and oddly sliced… thick on one end, thin on the other, falling off lopsided on the rice. I also ordered the energy roll, and while the salmon tempura on top was sort of edible, the roll overall was saturated with grease and the california roll underneath was completely tasteless, and again had more of a newspaper glue taste. Its the first time I have ever wanted some salt with my sushi… gimme something, something to make it taste better! I began to look around the room, and the only people with smiles seemed to be the staff. Suddenly, a sushi chef appeared with a deep grin on his face (shouldn’t all good sushi chefs be jerks?), and presented us with two pieces of deep-fried california roll, as a treat. the pieces they gave us were so awful tasting, I warned my dinner companion not to try. It tasted just like what warm steamed fish food might taste like. If only I could snap my fingers and go home… anything to get out of this strange place of huge smiles and utter disappointment.
